[VIDEO] Beatles Song “Martha My Dear” Was About A Dog…

A big fan of the Beatles I was quite surprised recently to learn the song “Martha My Dear” is about an English Sheep Dog named Martha and belong to Sir Paul McCartney. Sir McCartney penned the song as he was learning how to play piano and in the process started randomly singing words that might go with the song and the first words were Martha My Dear.

When I taught myself piano I liked to see how far I could go, and this started life almost as a piece you’d learn as a piano lesson. while I was blocking out words – you just mouth out sounds and some things come – I found the words ‘Martha my dear’.

The song Martha My Dear appears on the Beatles White Album. A sweet song that was often interpreted as a love song and indeed it was; only it was a love song to a dog.

McCartney had bought an Old English sheepdog puppy in 1965, soon after buying his house in Cavendish Avenue, London. He named the dog Martha, and she was his first pet.

Knowing now the song is about a dog has changed its meaning to me not for the bad, but for the better. Who doesn’t love to sing to their dog and it is absolutely adorable that Sir Paul McCartney would write and sing a song to his dog. The song now is more affectionate and holds more sentimental meaning. Martha is now forever immortalized in a song 😀

Here is a Beatles video of the song Martha My Dear and of course featuring Martha. Enjoy!
